3D Modeling
The new engine requires
a complete new design of the engine area, including a complete new
exhaust system. Therefore a 3D model of the kit pieces is needed.
The most important thing: The reference point and system. Usually the leading edge of the wing is chosen. For planning the engine area a precise model of the wing root area as well as the spar stub is needed.
These hand sketches now need to be entered into the 3D CAD program.
The J-5s airfoil is a Wortmann
FX67-K-170/17. It's not the youngest and so the first reaction of my
friend Phillip was "What do you want to do with this old thing?". Well
- on the other hand my DG400 has the exact same airfoil - and it's flying quite well!
Modeling the wings surface is fast and easy:
entering the airfoil, defining 3 planes, copying the airfoil 3x while
skaling and shifting it for the last plane, spanning the surface - Done
:-)
The next thing to do is to model the wing root and spar stub.
