J-5 Information
The J-5 is a small single seat full composite airplane. The pusher propeller as well as the V-tail makes it special looking. Like the Cri-Cri or BD5 it’s one of the small home build airplanes, but featuring all advantages of a composite airplane.
The J-5 also is named “Marco”. This is just a coincidence – it has nothing to do with me. But since the propulsion system of my J-5 is my own design, my J-5 is registered with the LBA (German FAA) as "Marko J-5".
Technical data:
Wing span: 8,0 m
Length: 4,70 m
Stall speed: 77 km/h
Max.
speed: 170 km/h
NE: 220 km/h
Range: 550 km
The original KFM engine proofed to be to weak. Some J-5s got upgrades with more powerful engines. Karl uses a Hirth F-23 and is very happy with it.
The cockpit is wide but rather short.
Doug’s J-5 in flight. Right now he is modifying it with a Hirth F23. You can find details on his home page:
Karl modified his J-5 with longer wings and included wing tanks.
This (Karl’s) panel offers more space than the original one column J-5 panel. Note the side instead of a center stick.
Doug’s J-5 displayed with a test mounted Hirth F23 engine.
Karl did build an Hirth F23 into his J-5. He designed and build the propeller himself. The molds are stored at my place.
In order to get a quiet propulsion it is not enough just to use a good muffler. Also the intake generates noise which needs to be silenced. Karl is using intake silencer on his J-5.
This here are Doug’s shoes (and of cause his J-5). The J-5 cockpit offers a view like only a few other airplanes!
