Profibus compatible high
temperature
infrared thermometer :
After I was done with the
environment control module project, I developed a Profibus
compatible infrared thermometer for the ERA
Technology (England) during my intership. These thermometers are used in industrial blast
furnaces.
The hardest thing was to get familiar with
Profibus. Implementing the firmware and to
write the PC software was then an easy thing to do. In fact I have been the first in
the company who did set up a working Profibus
system. The universal IX1, which is a special controller for fieldbus protocols,
has been used for the profibus implementation. A PIC17C42A
is controlling the device.
The analog part was done conventionaly. A 24 bit ADC from Analog Devices is employed for analog to digital conversion (AD7711).
In addition to Profibus, other industrial standards like 4-20mA loop and RS232 are implemented. To ensure a save industrial use, the power supply is completely galvanicaly separated by DC/DC converters.
Via several LEDs and buttons it is possible to control the state of the thermometer as stand alone device as specified by the customer.
